1. A 32 year old competitive cyclist is transfused with blood after a Road Traffic Accident. After recovering well initially, six hours later he starts experiencing chills, fever, a dry cough and ankle swelling. A chest X-Ray is requested and the assertive on call medical students interpret the CXR as suggestive of pulmonary oedema. 

 

 

2. A 32 year old competitive cyclist is transfused with blood after a Road Traffic Accident. After recovering well initially, six days later he starts experiencing chills, fever and feels generally unwell. The assertive on call medical students are asked to interpret some blood results and they describe a fall in Hct and rise in LDH. 

 

 

3. A 47-year old fishmonger develops a rash and itching after a transfusion. A few moments later, he starts wheezing.

 

 

4. A 65-year old receives a blood transfusion after having been involved in an RTA. Several days later, he notices purple and red spots on both his legs. He is otherwise well.

 

 

5. A 24 year old Greek physiotherapist with thalassaemia presents with lethargy and abdominal pain. The assertive on call medical students ask him where he has been on holiday as he looks tanned, but he denies any recent travels.
