For each scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each option may be used once, more than once or not at all.
1. Peering down your microscope at the sample of diarrhoea, you notice Gram negative curved rods. You faintly remember something about it releasing an enterotoxin which binds to receptors on the gut epithelium, causing the symptoms.
2. A feverish 55 year old architect presents with a non-productive cough and shortness of breath on exertion. His X ray shows characteristic widespread infiltrates, and your consultant mentions something about “fitting the stereotype” before striding off to his 4th patient in as many minutes.
3. A 21 year old rower presents to his GP one morning with unusually bad headache and photophobia after a night out. During the consultation, he vomits everywhere. They had won a race last week and celebrated by jumping into the river.
4. The X ray shows caseating necrosis in the upper zones.
5. A 22 year old party animal has had profuse diarrhoea and vomiting. He regails you with stories of his nights out and copious kebab consumption.
