For each scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each option may be used once, more than once or not at all.

1. A 28-year-old teacher presents with swelling and pain in her left leg. On examination, there is pitting oedema and tenderness over the calf. She gave birth (by Caesarian section) to a healthy baby boy four days ago.

2. A 17-year-old boy who is training to participate in the 2012 Olympics is admitted with a swollen and painful right arm. The swelling had come on suddenly 48 hours previously. Examination reveals oedema and dilated superficial veins in the affected limb. No other abnormalities are detectable and all pulses are palpable.

3. A 42-year-old farmer is in A&E. His notes say that he presented with haemoptysis and the FY1 doctor has written that he has a Wells score of 7.5.

4. A 49-year-old lady presents to the GP complaining of an “awful headache” and being very short of breath. She has facial swelling and swelling of both arms, she is Pemberton’s sign positive. Examination is otherwise unremarkable

5. A 73-year-old retired accountant with known irritable bowel disease is brought in by his family as they are concerned that he is acting very oddly. They tell you that he has been complaining of a headache over the past week and it seems to be getting worse. It is noted in his clerking that he has papilloedema.
