1. A 37 year-old mother of 3 receives a blood transfusion after being involved in a road traffic accident. Towards the end of her transfusion she begins to complain of a headache & feeling very cold, even though the doctor finds her temperature to be 40C.
2. A 33 year old mother of 2 receives a blood transfusion after being involved in a road traffic accident. She suddenly presents a week following her transfusion with yellow-tinged skin. Her haemoglobin levels are found to be falling.
3. A 20 year old woman with aplastic anaemia receives a platelet transfusion. 5 hours after the transfusion, the patient experiences chills & a dry cough, with a temperature of 39C accompanying a drop in BP. The patient has no previous cardiac history.
4. A 33 year old Group O man presents with his brother following a large road traffic accident, both receiving blood transfusions side-by-side on the busy ward. Shortly after the transfusion, the patient is restless, complaining of chills, a fever, vomiting & pain at his side and at the infusion site.
5. A 23 year old man receives a platelet transfusion in a Togolese hospital. Shortly after the transfusion, the patient is restless, complaining of chills, nausea & vomiting, and severe pain at his side. He’s found to have a high fever & low BP.
