1. A 30 year old man who recently returned from a holiday in India presents to A&E complaining of increasing tenderness in the right upper quadrant with a high fever.  He reports a 3 week history of worsening bloody diarrhoea. Ultrasound examination reveals 2 large abscesses in the liver.

 

 

2. A 21 year old student presents to his GP complaining of nausea, vomiting and watery diarrhoea.  He mentions that he ate some reheated leftovers from a Chinese takeaway he had the night before last. Stool microscopy revealed the presence of gram positive rods.

 

 

3. A 20 year old lady presents to her GP with a one week history of high fever, headaches and constipation.  She has a temperature of 40°C with a heart rate of 50. Examination reveals rose spots on the trunk with splenomegaly.

 

 

4. A 35 year old traveller presents to his GP complaining of abdominal pain, flatulence and foul smelling diarrhoea.  Stool microscopy revealed the presence of flagellated trophozoites, each with 2 nuclei.

 

 

5. A 19 year old girl who recently returned from her gap year presents to A&E with a 5 hour history of profuse watery non-bloody diarrhoea.  On examination she is afebrile and tachycardic with a blood pressure of 90/60.
