1. A neonate weighing 4.2kg presents at 2 days with limpness. His plasma glucose is 1.9mmol/l. His mother is known to be diabetic.
2. A 63-year-old diabetic man is found in a drowsy, confused state by his daughter. His plasma glucose is 2.3mmol/l. After receiving adextrose infusion, he is able to tell you that his GP had recently increased the dose of his diabetic drug, the name of which he can’t remember. He does not use insulin.
3. A 15-year-old girl is brought to A&E having collapsed at school. Her plasma glucose is 1.7mmol/l. On examination she is thin and has fine downy hair on her face, arms and trunk.
4. A 9-month old infant presents to A&E with a seizure. She has a history of recurrent infections and failure to thrive. On examination is found to have an enlarged liver.
5. A 20-year old diabetic is rushed to A&E at 2am having collapsed in Havanas. Her friends don’t recall her eating dinner before going out.
