For each scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each option may be used once, more than once or not at all.
1. A 5 month-old baby was brought to the A&E following runny nose, sneezing, mild cough and lower-grade fever. The baby is making a “whooping” sound when breathing in. The lab results indicate that it is a Gram-negative aerobic coccobacillus.
2. A newborn baby developed eye infection one week after vaginal delivery which leads to blindness. The baby was treated with antibiotics. His mother developed pelvic inflammatory disease later and his father showed symptoms of infectious urethritis.
3. A 9 year-old child developed rash on the face which spread to the trunk and limbs. She also had low-grade fever, sub-occipital and posterior cervical lymphadenopathy as well as joint pains and headache. The rash disappeared after three days without staining and peeling of the skin.
4. This is a type of herpes viruses which commonly causes chicken pox in children and Herpes zoster (shingles) in adults. This can be treated by a number of drugs and therapeutic agents including acyclovir for the chicken pox and famciclovir, valaciclovir for the shingles.
5. Cats are the primary source of infection to human hosts. Animals are infected by eating infected meat, by ingestion of faeces of an infected cat, or by transmission from mother to foetus. This disease rarely causes any symptoms in healthy adults but those with a weakened immune system may become seriously ill. It can cause encephalitis and can affect the heart, liver, inner ears and eyes.
