1. An 18 month old Afro-carribean male presents to A & E with his mother who says he has developed a firm mass in his abdomen over the past day. On examination he has a large palpable spleen and a haemoglobin of 6 g/dl.

 

 

2. A mother of Greek descent, presents to A & E with her six-month old son who is visibly jaundiced. Blood tests indicate a severe anaemia and raised bilirubin. On further questioning the mother reveals that she enjoyed homemade broad bean soup for dinner the evening previously.

 

 

3. 4 year old Mary presents with a two day history of profuse diarrhoea. Bloods showed a marked anaemia, raised bilirubin, low platelets, raised urea and creatinine. She had recently attended a school trip to the local petting zoo.

 

 

4. A 2 year old boy was taken to the GP by his mother who noticed that he appeared pale and had been more lethargic than usual of late. Bloods showed: Hb=5.0 g/dl, MCV= 58 fl, MCH 20pg. He drank plenty of milk, but was not a fan of meat.

 

 

5. A 2 year old girl of middle eastern descent presents with swollen and painful hands and feet. Haemoglobin is 7g/dl.
