For each scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each option may be used once, more than once or not at all.
1. A 12 year old child presents to his GP with a cough producing yellow-green sputum. His parents have just moved to this area and his mother informs the GP that her son had had an “operation on his face and heart” when he was first born. Whilst listening to his chest, the GP notes that the child has difficulties hearing the instructions given to him during the physical examination.
2. A 2 month old baby boy is brought to A&E with a fever, coughing and chills. He is having difficulty breathing and his temperature is 38.2 when measured. His mother points out some white patches in his mouth that have appeared a couple of days ago.
3. A 10 year old boy presents to his GP with a cough producing yellow-green sputum. This is his 4th visit in the last 3 months with such symptoms and the GP sends some blood samples to the lab. When the results come back, they show a complete lack of B cells and low levels of all antibody classes.
4. Another 10 year old boy presents to his GP with a cough producing yellow-green sputum. This is his 4th visit in the last 3 months with such symptoms and the GP sends some blood samples to the lab along with some sputum to culture. The blood results show hypocomplimenaemia and the sputum culture reveals encapsulated bacteria.
5. A newborn baby girl is noticed to be having difficulties breathing and as her anxious mother watches over her, she begins to notice her lips turn blue. The doctor who rushes in first notices that the baby has lost consciousness.
