For each scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each option may be used once, more than once or not at all.
1. Over 2000 people have died in China due to an outbreak of the H3N2 strain of Influenza, and the British public demand action. Which antiviral would be appropriate to stockpile in case the epidemic reaches the UK?
2. A 57 year old man with a history of heavy drinking and IV drug use attends your clinic. He appears drunk, but keeps muttering about “test results”. You check, and find that a blood sample he has given has been found to be positive for both HIV and Hepatitis B. What would be an appropriate antiviral to prescribe?
3. A frantic mother attends her local A&E with her 2 year old son. She explains that he has known CF, but has developed a severe cough and shortness of breath over the last 2 days, unresponsive to his home antibiotics. She pleads with you to help. Which drug would be best to prescribe?
4. A 64 year old woman reports to A&E with a fever, 3 months after a kidney transplant. She is also complaining of some diarrhoea, and blurry vision and pain in her left eye. The on-call F2 reports a ‘scrambled-egg’ appearance of the retina through the ophthalmoscope. Which antiviral should you give?
5. A 24 year old woman goes to a GUM clinic where you are working. She seems nervous and reluctant, however, you manage to reassure her and take a history. It transpires that she is HIV positive, but has also just found out that she is pregnant. She is terrified of passing the virus to her unborn child, but will only allow you to prescribe one drug, as she has heard about possible side effects on the foetus. Which antiviral would you recommend?
