1. A 23 year old geography student eats some mysterious meat he found in his flat’s kitchen. About a day later he has abdominal pain, vomiting and bloody diarrhoea. A stool culture identifies a Gram negative rod which turns MacConkey agar red.
2. A 30 year old engineer tries some of his grandmother’s canned peaches. The next morning his colleagues struggle to understand him and call an ambulance when his breathing becomes laboured.
3. A couple of days after disembarking from a cruise ship, a 60 year old former rock singer develops forceful vomiting & diarrhoea. In hospital, a single-stranded RNA virus is identified via PCR.
4. A 21 year old Spanish medical student eats a chicken. Over the next few days she develops a fever and diarrhoea. She cultures her own stool and finds a Gram negative helical bacterium.
5. An ex-Olympic swimmer and recent heroin enthusiast starts to feel unwell around a week after training in his local outdoor pool. He comes to the doctor when his diarrhoea persists for a third week.
