For each scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each option may be used once, more than once or not at all.

1) An infant boy was born prematurely at 25 weeks gestation, with a birthweight of 800g. He developed erythematous "diaper dermatitis" and maceration of the flexural areas. 2 days later, erythematous plaques appeared on his back and then, skin erosions with crusting spread over the whole body.

2) A baby girl was born prematurely at 32 weeks gestation; during delivery it was noted that the mother’s temperature was elevated. Within 24 hrs, the infant seemed reluctant to feed, and developed diarrhoea & vomiting. She was tachypnoeic, with irregular respirations, and flaring was observed; also, hypothermic. Blood culture revealed  Gram-positive, spherical bacteria.

3) A woman gave birth to a baby girl, but 2 weeks later rushed her to the hospital as her body started jerking uncontrollably.  In hospital, she was found to have an unstable temperature and there seemed to be a bulging of the soft spot of the skull.  On questioning the mother, it appeared the baby had been irritable and lethargic a few days prior to the seizure. CSF culture revealed the cause.

4. A 1-week old baby is brought in to the hospital by his grandmother, as she is concerned about the baby’s eyes; both his eyelids appear swollen and has a “watery” discharge. The reason the baby’s mother is not in herself is that she is at the Pharmacy, picking up the antibiotics she was prescribed for her Chlamydia infection.

5. A woman is worried about her 2 week old baby, as he is irritable and has been crying a lot. She noticed there seems to be a bulging of the soft spot on his head, and on closer inspection, noticed his skin is quite “blotchy” with what appears to be a rash too. His hands and feet feel cold.
