For each scenario below, choose
the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each option may be used once,
more than once or not at all.
1. A 24 year old male who
was diagnosed with Thalassaemia Major at 13 months
presents to the outpatients clinic complaining of malaise and erectile
dysfunction.
2. A 54 year old male smoker
is 7 days post-op for the repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He presents
with fever and jaundice and bloods show a falling Hb.
3. A 33 year old male was
brought in from a serious RTA. He was given a donor transfusion on the ward. He
later developed a fever and complained of suffering from a ‘dry cough’. The
patient became increasingly breathless.
4. A 22 year old female with
Sickle Cell anaemia presented 15 minutes after a donor blood transfusion with a
diffuse, itchy, erythematous rash on both forearms.
This responded well to cetirizine.
5. A 33 year old patient has
just given birth to her second child. The baby is jaundiced and placed under a
UV lamp. What investigation would you perform to test for foetal
haemoglobin-containing red cells.
