he is expected to lose a lot of blood during the procedure and needs 5 units of
blood on standby. In the lab donor blood
is checked against the drawn sample.

year old female Jehovas Witness is undergoing a colectomy for severe ulcerative colitis in 10 weeks and has
poor renal function. She refuses a blood
transfusion and asks for an alternative.
3. A 22
year old student involved in a car accident is given 1 unit of blood during an
operation to reconstruct his leg. Minutes after the
transfusion starts his blood pressure drops and pulse rises.
4. A 60
year old gentleman is recovering from an oesophagectomy
where he required 3 units of cross matched blood. Over the next 3 days his Hb dropped and there
was haemaglobinuria.
5. A 35
year old HIV+ve man who threw himself infront of a
bus has been rushed to theatre. He is
bleeding into his pelvis. He is
transfused with 6 units of blood but additional blood is required from an
alternative source during the operation
