For each
scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each
option may be used once, more than once or not at all.
1. A 30 year old male presents with painful
swelling and inflammation of his right foot, especially at the Achilles Tendon; urethritis and
conjunctivitis are also diagnosed.
2. An 80 year lady presents complaining of pain
on movement and stiffness after inactivity in her legs, most notably in her
hips and knees. She also complains of
pain in her hands and marked symmetrical swelling is noted in her DIP joints.
3. A 65 year old woman suffering from Coeliac disease presents with a
painful hip which is subsequently diagnosed as a spontaneous fracture of the
pelvis. She also complains of
generalised bone pain and on examination is noted to have weakness of the
proximal limb muscles. It is found that
her serum calcium is decreased whilst her ALP is higher than the normal range.
4. A single gene, autosomal
dominant disorder affecting the fibroblast growth factor receptor. Patients presenting with this condition have
characteristic short limbs, especially the proximal portion of the arms, along
with a pronounced lumbar lordosis, prominent forehead
and depressed nasal bridge.
5. A five year boy presents to the fracture
clinic for the tenth time in his life.
The majority of his fractures have been of a spontaneous nature. It is also noted that the uveal
pigment of his eye is visible through the sclera which strangely appears blue.
