1. This
disease is non-organ specific and characterised by vasculitis and anti-nuclear
antibodies (ANA).
2. A 55
year old female presents with stiffness of the joints especially following
inactivity. On examination there is local swelling and pain of the proximal
joints with ulnar deviation of the fingers.
3. An
elderly patient presents with malaise and a fever. On examination she is found
to have a restrictive ventilatory defect and the presence of erythema nodosum
is noted. A chest X-ray shows diffuse bilateral
mottled shadows with bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy. Additionallly blood tests
reveal hypercalcaemia.
4. Presentation
is with anaemia, bone pain, pathologic fractures, or Bence Jones proteinuria.
5. A 15
year old boy presents with fatigue, malaise and a fever in addition to a sore
throat. On examination he has enlarged neck lymph nodes with mild
hepatosplenomegaly. A full blood count reveals a leucocytosis while specific
tests show the presence of antibodies to EBV nuclear
antigen.
