For each scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each option may be used once, more than once or not at all.

1. A 19 year old female A-level student complains of a ‘burning feeling’ when urinating and an increased frequency of micturition. Upon taking a detailed history you note that she has been sexually active for the last three years and has not had any previous medical problems.

2.  A 65 year old female in-patient was admitted to hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia. She is now complaining of foul-smelling watery stools, fever and abdominal pain.

3. A 45 year old diabetic male presents with a three day history of pain, swelling and redness in his right ring-finger. Although he isn’t sure, he believes that this may have started after he cut himself whilst weeding out the garden. The poncy medical student that examined him noted the presence of ‘rubor, calor, dolor and tumor’.

4. A 27 year old male IVDU was admitted to hospital after presenting with a fever and a markedly painful and immobile arm. On examination his right arm was found to be swollen, extremely painful, erythematous and warm. The pain is exacerbated by movement and there is sympathetic effusion of neighbouring joints. On inspection of the patient’s notes, you find that he has a true allergy to penicillin.

5. A 16-year old girl wakes up with painful eyes. She finds it hard to open her eyes and is unable to stop herself from itching them. On examination you note very red eyes with an opaque purulent discharge.
