For each scenario below, choose
the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each option may be used once,
more than once or not at all.
1. A 22 year old male presents
with jaundice and splenomegaly following a summer holiday to Malia. Following splenectomy and folate supplementation the patient became asymptomatic.
2. A 17 year old girl of African
descent presents to her doctor with a sore throat. She is prescribed penicillin
however returns 3 days later complaining that the drug has given her dark
coloured urine.
3. A 40 year old vagrant
presented to A&E with blood in his urine after waking up following an 8”
overnight snowfall. He denies drinking or trauma.
4. A point mutation on the 11th
chromosome where glutamic acid is replaced by valine at the 6th
position causes this condition.
5. A girl is taken to her GP by
her mother for the 9 week baby check. The mother states that the pregnancy went
well with no complications yet she has noticed that her daughter is not feeding
well and often appears pale. On measurement the GP notes that the girl has
crossed the centriles falling from the 50th
at birth for height and weight to the 9th on both. Her mother
wonders whether this may have been caused by a recent holiday to Cyprus to see
the grandparents.
