Neurological Examination of the Leg 12: Sensation

Use cotton wool:

  • Use a fine wisp of cotton or your fingers to touch the skin lightly.

  • Ask the patient to respond (say "yes") whenever a touch is felt.

  • Test the following areas and ask the patient to tell you if there is any asymmetry:

    1. Front of both thighs (L2)
    2. Both knees (L3)
    3. Medial and lateral aspect of both calves
      (L4 and L5)
    4. Little toes (S1)
