Neurological Examination of the Leg 2: Muscle tone

With patient relaxed:

  • Flex and extend the patient's ankle and knee.

  • Observe for decreased (flaccid) or increased (spastic) tone.

  • Remind patient to relax, and shake knee from side to side.

  • Flick knee upwards (without warning).
If the foot leaves the bed, this suggests increased tone.
