Neurological Examination of the Leg 8: Testing for clonus

Ankle clonus:

  • Support the knee in a partly flexed position.
  • With the patient relaxed, quickly dorsiflex the foot.
  • Observe for rhythmic oscillations.

 

Knee clonus:

  • With the patient relaxed, quickly push the patella downwards.
